The Challenge
Dorothy was living with complex physical and mental health conditions, including chronic pain following multiple hip surgeries and complex PTSD. Her mobility had declined significantly, and due to pain, she had begun sleeping on her sofa as unable to safely get in and out of bed.
She was also highly isolated and had lost trust in healthcare services following previous negative experiences, compounded by communication barriers as Polish is her first language.
Our Approach
Our Occupational Therapy team focused on both practical support and building a therapeutic relationship. We provided a bed lever to enable safe transfers back into bed, alongside equipment including a shower chair, grab rails, a toilet frame, and a kitchen trolley to improve independence within her home.
Alongside environmental adaptations, we created space for her to share her experiences and worked to rebuild trust in services. We supported a referral into talking therapies, exploring options for a Polish-speaking practitioner to avoid previous issues with translation and confidentiality.
The Impact
Dorothy is now managing independently within her home environment and has returned to sleeping in her own bed. Her mobility and confidence have improved, and she is beginning to re-engage with support services. She remains extremely appreciative of the ongoing support, with reduced isolation and improved wellbeing.
